An Evening of Oddities and Curiosities – Garage Project Edition


When Brewski released the ‘An Evening of Oddities and Curiosities – Garage Project’ event on Facebook, my fingers couldn’t have worked any quicker messaging Matt Emmerson, Brewski’s drinker-in-chief, to secure my hot little seat.  Needless to say the evening was sold out in mere moments. Who wouldn’t want to have a night of food and matching Garage Project beer? No one, that’s who!

I had no doubt the brews would be sensational. It’s Garage Project; the hype is always matched or exceeded. Also, I had purchased some of their brews in my last frenzy buy up at Hawthorne Cellars, so the Garage Project beer tasting jig was up (for the most part).

What’s brilliant over the years I’ve delved the craft beer movement, is the echelon in which brews have been catapulted. Gone are the days where degustation menus are only matched by beautiful aperitifs and wines. What’s more, degustation with matching beers tends to be more experimental with food, and I like a good experiment!

Brewski’s Head Chef, Tim Sharp, thought up an incredible menu to match Garage Project’s most delicious.

While all of the dishes were delicious and nicely matched, the stand out for me was Garage Project an Milk & Moustache Cookie Bar’s  ‘Cookies and Cream’ – Belgian Strong Dark Ale matched with lamb cutlet w deep fired sage and smoked dark chocolate ganache; it was unbelievable! The sweet lamb with the bitter and woody deep fried sage, offset smoky sweet chocolate was incredible. At first I thought the match may be a bit rich, but I was wrong! The ale almost cut the richness of the sauce and worked with the sage to bring out a nice spice flavour in the brew.

Notwithstanding the above, I really enjoyed all of the courses and brew matches, most notably:


  • Slow roasted stuffed jalapenos with sugar dusting;
  • Maple syrup and vanilla bean coleslaw w edible dirt.


  • Cabbages and Kings Oyster Stout.

All in all it was a fabulous night with great company, great beer, great food, and a fantastic host.
