Living in South Brisbane/West End gives me endless choices for food and drinking venues. I’m seriously spoiled, so when when I heard that a Billykart establishment was going to be nestled at the bottom of Aria’s Botanica Residences, I may have squealed a little. Chef Ben O’Donoghue’s Billykart Kitchen in Annerley is a wonderful place to eat and drink, but I’m so glad he pulled his Billykart to the heart of West End.
I had watched the Botanica residences getting built with great enthusiasm, especially because of its ginormous garden wall stuck to the front of the building’s facade. I also noticed that there was retail space at the buildings reception, so that always stirs curiosity. I hoped like hell it would be something different!
Of course, when the aqua neon Billykart sign was installed, I knew we were in for a treat. More, when I saw that Billykart had procured both retail spaces at the bottom of the building and called one of the them ‘Billykart Provisions’, I knew that West Enders were in for more than a treat; we would have a little bit of awesomeness injected into our balcony get-togethers and alone time pig-outs. Not only will we be able to chow down on homemade packaged produce, take-home meals, cakes, pies, pastries, salads and gourmet sandwiches, as well as a range of specially sourced items including artisan breads, smallgoods and cheeses. They’ll also sell craft spirits, boutique Australian and international wines, craft beer sold off the tap by the growler and house-made and bottled cocktails. That’s right, you’ll be able to fill your growlers!
My first visit was for Friday ‘thank God that week is over’ drinks. My first impression; a West End Queenslander home. Lots of wood, warm light, the kitchen in the heart of the venue, simple decor, ‘verandah’ and a friendly welcoming smile from the staff. It looked and felt like a fantastic spot.
So, I wasted no time perusing the wine list which had great selection of thirst quenching whites, and it was hot, so my friend Kobie and I (in true form) demolished 2 bottles of their Rialto Prosecco as well as 2 serves of their delicious truffled fries. When I went up to pay the bill, I spoke with co-owner Ben Roberts and asked whether I would be able to bring Thomas to the establishment given they had a great outdoor space nestled underneath the garden wall. His answer was a resounding YES!
I swiftly returned on that Sunday morning with Thomas to sample their brunchy goodness. Thomas was greeted beautifully by the staff and patrons and given a bowl of water and a comfy position at my table to rest.
I ordered a coffee (of course) and the Billykart Potato Waffle Croquet Madame. OMG! It was delicious. Beautifully fried egg on top of waffle, béchamel, ham and mustardy heaven. They certainly didn’t skimp on the elements in the dish. I loved it!
I’ve since been back with Thomas several times and had the crispy corn fritters and the Aussie Asian eggs. Both sensational.
This place is wonderful. Take your family, friends and pooch to this unique West End hot spot on the Corner of Boundary and Edmondstone Streets and savour a breakfast, brunch, lunch or dinner. Trust me, you’ll thank me (and the wonderful staff).
