Archive’s Armakeggon – The Hoppiest Place on Earth
There is one time of year when the excitement of beer gets the better of me; overwhelming, all consuming excitement. ARMAKEGGON!
Three years ago, being a beer novice, still am, and a virgin to many craft varieties, I joined my well-seasoned beer buds at Armakeggon for the first time. It was total sensory overload! I had no idea what to try, what order to try them, and what I liked and didn’t like, but it flung me head first into broader craft beer ranges.
What I loved most was talking beer with my mates, and taking notes and contriving a rating system for the beers… It made me excited to taste the brews.
This year was no different. Although I had already tried a few of the 40+ beers on tap, and the tasting passport was an excellent addition mitigating yet another rating system, it was still the same ‘OMG OMG’ feeling I got three years ago. I just loved it.
Some concentrate on the mechanics of the day, but for me, Armakeggon represents what’s great about the craft beer industry. From the big craft breweries to the infinitesimal, the focus is the same: variety, quality, flavour, and enjoyment. Archive makes sure that there are plenty of fantastic craft beers and ciders on tap. Even a boilermaker session this year! It’s the brews that keep me coming back, along with the other Armakeggonites.
I started the day big with Sierra Nevada’s Nibs of Steel. Wow, why on earth did I decide to go with an American Imperial / Double Stout? Why the hell not! It was sensational. It started my day off the right way the day for my five favourite brews. These are in no particular order:

- LoverBeer – Madamin – Sour Ale
- Panhead Custom Ales – The Vandal – NZ Pale Ale
- Brisbane Brewing Co / King Brown Brewing – Return of the Gimp – Double IPA
- Brisbane Brewing Co – Gnarley Wine – Barley Wine
A HUGE mention has to go to Green Beacon’s (and Archive’s) Blood Orange IPA; incredible aroma and sensational taste.
Just on the side, the food at Armakeggon was just the treat! The pork sliders were my pick, followed closely by the schnitzel burger. Suffice to say the day went smoothly without incident. If there was a hitch, I didn’t pick up on it. Great job Archive crew, especially Josh and Russell!
